But now, the 21-year-old says he’s “starting to grow a connection” to the song, thanks to its use in the 2012 Olympics.
“Home” has been used in commercials for the “Fab 5,” the five American female gymnasts who scored gold in the all-around team competition last week. As a result, the song’s digital sales have jumped, selling 228,000 in the last week, according to Nielsen Soundscan. “Home” also leaped 80 spots to No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week. It’s sold 844,215 tracks since its June release.
Phillips said he’s delighted to have his song played on millions of TV screens via the London Olympics. He says initially he didn’t want to get his hopes up about the song’s potential, but that the sales boost is “exciting.”
“I just tried to let the song go about its business. I’m not trying to make people buy it if they don’t want to,” he said.
The song’s reach doesn’t end there: “Home” is also in Clint Eastwood’s upcoming film “Trouble with the Curve,” which stars Justin Timberlake and Amy Adams. It’s in theaters on Sept. 21 and is about a retiring baseball scout and his daughter.
Phillips, who said the song is played after a “dramatic” scene, says getting it in the film is “awesome.”
Despite all of the song’s success, he said he doesn’t feel the pressure as he’s recording his debut album, though others may feel it: “Not for me, I think for some other people.”
His album, which he calls “jazz-rock,” does not have a release date. He says he hopes it will include “Drive Me.”
“I just want to give my all on the songs on the album,” he said. “I’d rather sell 10,000 copies of something I’m proud than 20 million copies of something that’s not really me.”
“Idol,” which returns in January, has an open judge seat since Jennifer Lopez and Steve Tyler announced their exits last month. Phillips said Stevie Wonder would be best to join Mariah Carey on the judging panel.
“I think he can really help out with the show,” he said. “I really respect him as an artist.”

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Ryan Braun snapped an 18-at bat slump with an RBI double in the eighth inning, lifting Milwaukee to a three-game sweep of Cincinnati.
Cincinnati’s Jonathan Broxton (1-1) started the eighth with the Reds leading 2-1. He retired the first two batters before an infield single by Norichka Aoki. Aoki stole second and took third on a throwing error.
Carlos Gomez hit a soft liner that just got over the outstretched glove of the shortstop and Aoki scored to tie the game. Gomez stole second and Braun followed with a sharp liner to drive in Gomez.

NEW YORK (AP) — Giancarlo Stanton hit two two-run homers as Miami handed New York its ninth straight home loss.
Stanton went deep twice against an ineffective Chris Young (3-6) and finished with four hits in his second game back from knee surgery.
Miami’s Jose Reyes also connected against his former team. He extended his hitting streak to a career-high 26 games, the longest in the majors this season.

HOUSTON (AP) — Gio Gonzalez pitched nine innings and hit a home run — both career firsts — to lead Washington past Houston.
Nationals manager Davey Johnson was hoping Gonzalez (14-6) could go deep into this game after his bullpen had been taxed with games of 11 and 12 innings to start this series.
He got just what he wanted from Gonzalez, whose other complete game was an eight-inning outing with Oakland in 2010. Things got dicey in the ninth when he allowed three hits and a run and had the tying run on third before striking out Matt Downs to end the game.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Clayton Richard pitched a shutout as San Diego swept Chicago.
Richard (9-11) pitched out of trouble three times to hand Chicago its eighth straight loss. Richard struck out five, walked one and hit a batter as the Cubs had a runner reach third base three times.
Chicago scored just four runs across the three-game series.
San Diego’s runs came on Will Venable’s RBI double in the second inning and Yonder Alonso‘s run-scoring single in the eighth.
Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija (7-10) allowed four hits in seven innings.

BEAN Seattle is holding their 5th annual TGAL Date Auction on Thursday, August 16th at AcquaBar in Belltown at 7pm.
BEAN Seattle is a volunteer-run charitable nonprofit organization that helps other charitable causes through networking, friendships, and volunteering.
As part of their Think Global Act Local (TGAL) campaign, they raise money through their date auction event, which so happens to be their largest fundraising event every year. Money raised in last year’s date auction went toward educating girls in Rwanda through the Rwanda Girls Initiative — BEAN cut them a check for $10,000.
This year, the money collected at the 5th Annual BEAN Date Auction will help provide clean cook stoves to indigenous farming families in Costa Rica through Fremont-based charity, SeaChar.org.
People can bid on items through their silent auction or bid on a date experience with one of the bachelors or bachelorettes.
