Michelle Obama: We don’t have a single minute to waste

CHARLOTTE — Michelle Obama spent Wednesday morning trying to fire up two key members of the Democratic base: African Americans and Hispanics.

In separate remarks before both the African American Caucus and the Hispanic Caucus, the first lady made it clear that the groups would be crucial to the President Obama’s chances in November.

“We don’t have a single minute to waste,” said Obama, who joked she was a bit sleepy after her prime-time address to the convention Tuesday night. “We’re going to need every single one of you out there.”

The first lady noted that Obama pulled out close victories in 2008 in Florida and North Carolina — two states where African-American and Hispanic turnout could be the difference-maker for the president. Obama won North Carolina by 14,000 votes — about 5 votes per precinct — and he won Florida by 230,000 votes, roughly 36 votes per precinct.

“Starting from the moment you get out of this seat, we need you to go out and find your 36 people,” Obama said.

Before the first lady took the stage, White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett reminded the African American Caucus that the president knows the black community is the bedrock of his support.

“The president is here because of all of you,” Jarrett said. “He stands on your shoulders, your parents’ shoulders, your grandparents’ shoulders. But there is still much work today.”

With the Hipsanic Caucus, the first lady reminded the audience of the president’s backing of the DREAM Act and his efforts to win passage of the health care law — legislation popular in the Latino community.

While Barack Obama won the vast majority of voters in both groups, the president needs Hispanics and black voters to have a big turnout in key battleground states.

“So we’re going to have to roll up our sleeves!” Obama said. “Roll them up. Get it done. Sixty-two days is nothing. But if we have all of you and everyone you know, we will get this done.”

Padilla to get new sentence date in terror case

Convicted terrorism plotter Jose Padilla will soon be back in Miami to receive a new prison sentence after an appeals court said he deserves more time behind bars.

A federal judge scheduled a hearing Wednesday to set a new sentencing date. Padilla himself will not appear in court until a later date.

The 41-year-old Padilla was sentenced to 17 years in prison after he and two others were convicted in 2007 of several terrorism-related charges. He’s scheduled for release in January 2022 with time off for good behavior.

The appeals court ruled Padilla deserves a longer sentence because he trained to kill at an al-Qaida camp in Afghanistan and had a long previous criminal record.

Padilla was held more than three years without charge as an enemy combatant.

Cupid plc [LSE AIM: CUP], publisher of a world’s many renouned and fastest-growing online dating communities, is ratcheting adult a strong anti-scammer measures by implementing state-of-the-art Scamalytics technology from RecSys Ltd. Scamalytics anti-scammer record is already handling on Cupid’s BeNaughty.com and GirlsDateForFree.com websites, with rollout designed on other Cupid plc sites such as Cupid.com, Flirt.com, BlackMatch.com within months.

The formula to date have been impressive: Cupid’s anti-scammer measures are now throwing scammers 35 percent faster and scammer showing is adult 10 percent. And, to stay forward of a fast-moving game, Cupid can now fast adjust a anti-scammer measures to elaborating scammer techniques.

“Scammers are a flay of online dating. Whether it be a classical small-time burglar handling from an Internet café in Nigeria, or a legions of ostensible cam girls looking to imitation people out of their money, we’re clamping down tough on these parasites to make a online dating communities safe, fun and rewarding,” pronounced Sean Wood, communications executive during Cupid plc. “RecSys’ Scamalytics has consistently proven to be a many modernized accessible and, already, we’re saying glorious formula by regulating worldly AI record on a front line of this effort.”

With some-more than 12 million members underneath notice by Scamalytics’ programmed scanner detection, Cupid has already seen a 10 percent diminution in ‘front line’ scammer activity. This, joined with Cupid’s existent Quality Assurance methods and members’ possess fraud stating activities, has meant 20,000 scammers are being identified and henceforth blocked from Cupid’s communities any month. In addition, any particular identified as a scammer is combined to a Scamalytics master database, that is accessed by other online dating companies that use Scamalytics.

Mark Brooks, editor of Online Personals Watch and boss of a Internet Dating Executive Alliance, sees a Scamalytics network fondness as an critical step toward boosting a repute and recognition of online dating and people find sites: “Scammer abuse is still a scandal of a internet dating attention and so it’s good to see Cupid, a perceptive open company, operative with Nick and his group to kick scammer abuse.”

Scamalytics employs worldly algorithms to detect scammers by examining a user’s login details, form description, encrypted email and discuss messages, and other pivotal indicators of brute activities. To brand intensity troublemakers with a high grade of probability, record also factors in a user’s login location, IP address, form photo, and function patterns typically used by scammers.

However, we can’t rest for prolonged as a conflict ceaselessly evolves. Our idea is to spin a attention customary that unites a online dating attention to discharge scammers from a communities.”

Expert tips on how to brand and equivocate scammers

1.    Be heedful of provocative images. Some scammers will post voluptuous cinema of girls and wait for responses, rather than be actively scamming on site. This will concede them to lay on a database for months until a right “victim” is found.

2.    Military cinema should spin on your fraud radar warning, too. Some of a biggest scams start from ostensible soldiers in a armed services with a plausible moan story and a unfortunate need to “settle down.”

3.    Try and keep a review going on a dating site messaging complement rather than being dragged off to Skype or MSN, during slightest initially. Then there are some simple conversational tests we can try:

  •     If they are internal to you, rivet them in a local-knowledge review (e.g. a weather, some circuitously event, sports team, TV, or festival) and see if they trip up.
  •     If they are not internal to you, ask yourself because they would wish a long-distance attribute privately with you? Do we have some quite surprising common ground? If not, because aren’t they restricting themselves to people a bit nearer to their stream location?

4.    Look out for difference like “dear” and out-of-date regretful language, as good as badly shaped sentences.

5.    Never, ever send income to anyone on a dating site, and generally equivocate wiring cash.

6.    Always be on a surveillance for get-rich-quick schemes. If it sounds too good to be loyal afterwards it substantially is a scam.

Grandal’s tying HR in 8th, Forsythe’s 2-run single in 11th give Padres 6-3 win …

Logan Forsythe took full advantage, hitting a two-run single with the bases loaded in the 11th against Ely after Yasmani Grandal tied the score with a two-run homer in the eighth off Guerrier, and the San Diego Padres beat Los Angeles 6-3 Tuesday night.

“We’re just at the point where we’re kind of at the end of our rope after the last few days with guys unavailable in the bullpen,” Mattingly said. “But we have confidence in the guys that are here.”

The Dodgers wasted an excellent outing from ace Clayton Kershaw and dropped 1½ games behind St. Louis in the race for the second NL wild card. They remained 4½ games behind the NL West-leading Giants, who also lost in 11 innings at home, to Arizona.

“You’ve got to give a lot of credit to the Padres. They battled me all night and they put some great at-bats together,” Kershaw said. “It’s definitely frustrating to lose like that. But at the same time, we’ve been playing well. Every game has been close, and you’ve just got to keep grinding. It’s September. It’s put up or shut up. We’ve got to win games no matter what.”

John Ely (0-1), working his second inning of relief, gave up a leadoff single to Cameron Maybin in the 11th. Everth Cabrera followed with a bunt single, and both runners took an extra base on third baseman Luis Cruz’s throwing error to first.

Will Venable was intentionally walked with one out before Forsythe lined a 1-2 pitch to right-center. Chase Headley followed with an RBI single.

“My approach was just to see the ball deep and try to go back up the box with it,” Forsythe said. “Luckily, I got a pitch to do it with and stayed through it well enough to put us on the board.”

Padres rookie Tommy Layne (1-0) pitched a perfect inning for his first major league win, striking out Adrian Gonzalez, Matt Kemp and Hanley Ramirez on 13 pitches. Luke Gregerson got three outs for his fourth save.

The Padres tied it 3-all in the eighth when Headley led off with a single and Grandal drove a 1-0 pitch to right-center for his seventh home run.

Guerrier had been limited to 8 2-3 innings all season due to elbow tendinitis. He took the loss last Friday night against Arizona when he served up a leadoff homer in the 11th inning to Jason Kubel in his first appearance since April 18.

“We’ve been pretty clutch the second half of the season, and tonight was my night to come through,” Grandal said. “Forsythe also did it in the 11th inning with a big clutch hit that got us a win.”

Kershaw pitched seven sharp innings and reached the 200-strikeout mark for the third straight season despite giving up a home run to Chris Denorfia on his first pitch of the game. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the seventh, when the Dodgers took a 3-1 lead with Shane Victorino’s RBI single and Gonzalez’s sacrifice fly.

Manny Pacquiao fight date switched

The date of Manny Pacquiao’s next fight moved for a third time on Tuesday, but the Filipino superstar still plans to fight before the end of the year — even though the identity of his next opponent has not been determined.

Top Rank, Pacquiao’s promoter, formally requested that the Nevada State Athletic Commission reserve Dec. 8 for Pacquiao to fight an opponent to be determined at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, commission executive director Keith Kizer told ESPN.com.

Rafael’s Boxing Blog

Pacquiao’s fight will headline an HBO PPV event.

“As is the customary procedure for working with the NSAC, we requested the date from them,” Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti said. “The potential matchups are all being discussed with Manny and his team, and we anticipate the process to be completed in a timely fashion for all involved.”

Pacquiao, the only fighter in boxing history to win world titles in eight weight divisions, is coming off an extraordinarily controversial split decision defeat to Timothy Bradley Jr. at the MGM Grand on June 9 in which he lost his welterweight belt.

Originally, Pacquiao’s return was supposed to come on Nov. 10. But with time running short to mount a promotional tour — which would have had to take place this week at the latest — combined with issues surrounding Pacquiao’s upcoming campaign for re-election to congress in the Philippines and the fact that no deal had been finalized with an opponent — Pacquiao adviser Michael Koncz requested that Top Rank chief Bob Arum move the fight to Dec. 1.

However, when Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30 KOs), one of boxing’s biggest stars, finalized a deal Friday to challenge junior middleweight titlist Austin Trout on that date, it left Dec. 1 unavailable and Arum and Pacquiao targeted Dec. 8.

One of the three names Pacquiao and Arum were discussing was a rematch with Cotto, whom Pacquiao knocked out in an exciting 2009 welterweight title fight. The sides negotiated but could not come to an agreement, particularly on the maximum weight for the fight, according to Cotto attorney Gabriel Penagaricano.

That leaves two other names as the possible opponents for Pacquiao: Bradley (29-0, 12 KOs) in a rematch or a fourth fight with Mexican rival Juan Manuel Marquez (54-6-1, 39 KOs) against whom Pacquiao is 2-0-1 in three controversial decisions, including a majority decision win in November.

Koncz said he, Pacquiao (54-4-2, 38 KOs) and Arum are still talking about the opponents and a deal but that Pacquiao intended to fight Dec. 8.

“I’ve got nothing right now. Maybe we’ll have something (Wednesday). Hopefully, by the end of the week,” Koncz told ESPN.com.
