Ford’s Mulally: No retirement date set

DETROIT (AP) — Ford CEO Alan Mulally said Tuesday that he hasn’t told the company’s board when he plans to retire.

“Absolutely not,” the 67-year-old Mulally said when asked the question in an interview on CNBC in New York. He was attending an event to launch the new Fusion midsize car.

Mulally said he discusses succession plans regularly with the board, but he gave no details. He also said there was no reason to announce his retirement date because he’s committed to serving the company.

Speculation about Mulally’s future has been rampant in Detroit. It intensified last week when Ford’s board discussed who might replace him. No decision was announced.

Many in the company expect Americas President Mark Fields to be promoted to Chief Operating Officer, a step that prepares him to take over for Mulally.

Mulally is highly respected at Ford for saving the company from financial collapse. Shortly after he was hired away from Boeing Co. in 2006, he mortgaged all of Ford’s assets for a huge loan. The $23.5 billion loan paid for a restructuring and helped keep Ford out of bankruptcy protection.

Earlier Tuesday, Mulally told The Associated Press in an interview that he plans to be at Ford for a while. “I have no other plans going forward but to serve this great company,” he said.

He also told reporters at the Fusion event that he has read reports about his retirement, calling them interesting and creative. “Please don’t write me off yet,” he said.

Every Single Feature That Is New In iOS 6

Every Single Feature That Is New In iOS 6 [Mega-Guide]

(10:57 am PDT, Sep 18)

iOS 6 is just a day away.

We’ve all been itching to get our hands on iOS 6 since it got its first unveiling at WWDC back in June, and tomorrow, three months after that announcement, the software will finally get its public debut. Apple’s packed a ton of new features into this update, including some major new features like Map and Passbook, plus some enhancements to existing apps and features, such as new Siri capabilities and a VIP inbox in Mail.

Apple’s been promoting some of these features on its website, but there are tons you may not have heard about. With that said, here’s your comprehensive guide to everything that’s new in iOS 6.

Siri

Let’s start with Siri, the feature that revolutionized voice-controlled assistants when it launched on the iPhone 4S last year. It’s received a lot of criticism since then, but in iOS 6, Siri is much-improved.

Now on iPad iPod touch

For a start, it’s not exclusive to the iPhone 4S anymore; you’ll also find Siri on the new iPad, and on the fifth-generation iPod touch.

International local search

Until now, searching Siri for local business or nearby points of interest was exclusive to user in the United States, but now anymore. Local search is now available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. It’s also coming to Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan in October.

Sports scores, restaurant reservations, movie showtimes, and more

In iOS 6, Siri is more intelligent than ever before. You can now use it to quickly find sports scores for your favorite team, and their league standings; to find nearby restaurants and make reservations; to find movie showtimes and see the latest movie reviews; and to launch the apps installed on your iOS device. You can also ask Siri to make posts on Twitter and Facebook — no fingers required.

Maps

Google Maps is gone in iOS 6, which means no more Street View. But it makes way for Apple’s awesome new Maps app, arguably one of the biggest and best features of iOS 6.

Flyover

Forget satellite view and 2D imagery, Flyover is where it’s at. As its name suggests, Flyover allows you to fly over some of the world’s biggest cities, with interactive 3D views that let you zoom, pan, tilt, and rotate around skyscrapers, landmarks, and more. Apple’s highly-detailed imagery is like nothing you’ve ever seen before, and it’ll blow you away.

Turn-by-Turn navigation

Yes, I hear you — it’s about time! Android has it, Windows Phone has it, even BlackBerry has it. Now iOS has it, too: turn-by-turn navigation. Stick your TomTom on eBay and trust Apple’s new Maps app to get you where you want to go, with spoken directions, a 3D view, and real-time traffic integration.

And like everything Apple builds, the turn-by-turn feature looks great. It sports beautiful maps; large, shiny road signs and arrows superimposed over the images that show you which way to go and how long it’s going to take to get there; and dynamic camera angles that turn as you do. Turn-by-turn navigation even works from the lock screen, and provides roadwork alerts so that you can avoid the jams.

Passbook

Like Maps, Passbook is brand new in iOS 6, and it’s the closest you’ll get to an iPhone wallet for the foreseeable future. Boarding passes, movie tickets, retail coupons, store cards and more can be turned into digital cards that all live inside your Passbook app.

Each one is intelligent, too; for example, your Starbucks card will tell you your remaining balance, while retail coupons and boarding passes will automatically pop up on the lock screen when you arrive at certain stores or at the airport — so you don’t even need to open Passbook to use them. And the best bit: they can be updated over-the-air, so if your gate changes after you’ve checked in for your flight, Passbook will let you know.

Mail

There are very few third-party email clients for iOS, so it’s a good job Apple has made it so great. In iOS 6, Mail gets a number of new features that you’ll love.

Pull-to-refresh

Thanks to good old Tweetie, pull-to-refresh is a gesture we’ve all grown to love in iOS, and you’ll find it built into a huge number of apps. Now Apple’s using it, too. In iOS 6, the refresh button in Mail is gone. To fetch new email, simply pull down your mail list and it’ll refresh.

VIP inbox

Missing emails from your loved ones and people who are important to you is now a thing of the past. In iOS 6, you can tell Mail who your “VIPs” are, and it will automatically filter all emails from those people into a dedicated inbox. Then, when you’re in a rush, you don’t need to skim through all the junk in your inbox to find that email from your mom — just check your VIP inbox.

Shortcut to drafts

Finding draft emails is a pain if you have a lot of email accounts. Sometimes you forget which account you used to compost it, then you have to find the drafts folder for that account to locate it. But in iOS 6, there’s a quick and easy shortcut that takes you to every draft email you have — simply tap and hold the compose button until they appear.

App Store previews

If you receive a link to an iOS app via email, Mail will open up a preview window that shows the app’s price, description, screenshots, ratings, and reviews. You can even purchase the app there and then if you want to, and at no point will you be pulled out of Mail and taken to the App Store — it’s all done from your inbox.

Dedicated signatures for all accounts

This is a feature I’ve been calling out for on iOS: dedicated signatures for each email account. You can now set up different signatures for every account set up on your iOS device, rather than having to use the same one no matter which address you’re using.

Tap to insert photos videos

If you start an email under iOS 5, there’s no way to insert an image or video into it — you have to start the email from your Camera Roll and the content is inserted automatically. In iOS 6, however, you can tap to insert photos and videos directly within Mail. That means you can start your email, write out your message, then attach whatever you’d like to it. You no longer need to scrap draft emails because you forgot to insert something.

App Store

New look

In iOS 6, the App Store has been given an entirely new look. Gone is the traditional blue theme so familiar to Apple’s built-in apps, and in comes a new dark look that’s been completely overhauled from the ground up. It sports fancy rotating banners for features apps, the ability to see what’s new in each update without leaving the update tab. When you download an app, you will no longer be pulled out of the App Store and taken to your home screen (yay!), but you will get a handy status bar that shows the progress of your download.

No passwords for updates

You no longer need to enter your iTunes password just to download updates to your existing apps. I’ve never understood why this was a requirement, but thankfully it’s done in iOS 6.

New search

As you’d expect, the App Store’s search section has been given the same new look the rest of the store has, but it also gets an entirely new way to search apps. Rather than being presented with a simple list of apps when you perform a search, the App Store will show you all of your results in miniature previews that include a screenshot of the app. All you have to do is flick through them to find the app you’re looking for. If you used the Chomp service before it was acquired by Apple, this design will already be familiar to you.

iTunes

New look

Just like the App Store, the iTunes app has been overhauled with a new dark design.

Preview history

Have you ever previewed a song in iTunes, then moved on and forgotten what it was? In iOS 6, the iTunes store keeps a history of everything you’ve previewed, so you can go back and find out what that catchy tune was that you were listening to earlier.

No more podcasts

Podcasts no longer appear within the iTunes app, but Apple does have a dedicated Podcasts app that’s just fantastic. It doesn’t come pre-installed with iOS 6 unfortunately, but you will find it in the App Store and it’s completely free to download.

Safari

Safari gets a number of new features in iOS 6, which could persuade you to ditch third-party browsers like Google Chrome — especially if you’re an iCloud user.

iCloud tabs

One of my favorite is iCloud tabs, which syncs all the tabs you have open in Safari between your Mac and iOS devices. Open a URL on your Mac, and as long as you’re iPhone is connected to the same iCloud account, you’ll quickly be able to open the same URL there, too. Just tap the iCloud button that sits alongside the address bar to see all the tabs you have open.

Offline Reading List

Reading List is great, but in iOS 5, it wasn’t too handy if you didn’t have a data connection. In iOS 6, however, you can enjoy an offline Reading List, with full web pages — not just links — that you can enjoy wherever you are. So even when you’re 30,000 feet up in the air with no Wi-Fi connection, you can catch up on all those articles you’ve been meaning to read.

Fullscreen view

Safari now offers fullscreen view in landscape mode, which hides the address and navigation bars so that all you see is your web page.

Chelsea vs. Juventus: Date, Time, TV Info and Preview

Something has to give in the matchup between Chelsea and Juventus.

Both squads are coming off impressive streaks. Chelsea have recently won the Champions League title and Juventus’ winning streak is showing they are serious contenders.

Despite the teams’ recent successes, one of these teams will undoubtedly begin the Champions League campaign with a loss.

Where: Stamford Bridge, London, England

When: Wednesday, September 19, 2012

Time: 19:45 p.m. GMT/2:45 p.m. ET/11:45 a.m. PT

TV Info: Fox Soccer Channel (USA)/Sky Sports HD 2 (UK)

Juventus Breakdown

Juventus were the champions of Serie A last season, as they went undefeated. In fact, the squad is currently on a 42-match winning streak in Serie A dating back to the end of the 2010-11 season.

The meeting between Chelsea and Juventus may prove to be more difficult for the Italian squad, as they will be without manager Antonio Contre, who is currently serving a 10-month ban for failing to report match-fixing. Massimo Carrera will be taking over the manager duties for the duration of Contre’s ban.

Unfortunately for Juventus, they will play without former Inter defender Lucio, who will miss the majority of the season due to an ankle injury.

Juventus does have the debut of former Manchester United midfielder Pogba to look forward to, however.

Nevertheless, Juventus still has the great playmaking ability of Andrea Pirlo to help them topple the current Champions League title holders.

The meeting between these two teams should be a low-scoring affair, as both teams are looking to hold off a win in order to not begin the season 0-1.

Chelsea Breakdown

Chelsea begins its defense of its Champions League title against Juventus. Fortunately for The Blues, they have an impressive winning streak at home, winning all six of their Champions League games.

Chelsea won the last meeting between the two clubs as well.

Even with all the recent success, Chelsea are still looking to find their identity considering that the team has new players.

Notably, the squad no longer has long-time Didier Drogba. In his place is Fernando Torres

This match can be considered more of a test to how the players mesh together for Blues manager Roberto Di Matteo.

According to Mirror.co.uk, John Terry is said to have gone through a training session with no real concern and should be available to play against Juventus.

Terry suffered a knee injury towards the end of a 0-0 game against QPR. Look for Terry to play and be a factor in Wednesday’s game.

India to erect single row fence along Bangladesh border

India will erect single row fencing instead of double row fencing in several areas along the border with Bangladesh, officials said in Agartala Tuesday.

About 80 percent of the 856-km India-Bangladesh international border in Tripura has so far been fenced with double rows to check trans-border movement of militants, prevent infiltration, and curb border crimes.

“More than 61 patches of the India-Bangladesh border with Tripura could not be fenced following objections by villagers,” a Border Security Force (BSF) spokesperson said.

“Bangladesh has been objecting to the fencing at the zero line,” the spokesperson added.

The Tripura government had also asked the central government to build fences at the actual border (zero line) with Bangladesh.

According to international norms and the Indira-Mujib treaty between India and Bangladesh, barbed wire fencing has to be erected 150 yards inside each other’s territory from the zero line of the border.

The spokesperson said: “A meeting was held Tuesday between senior officials of the BSF and BGB (Border Guards Bangladesh) at Sidhai in western Tripura, 30 km north of here. The meeting discussed erecting a single row fencing instead of double row fencing in the desired areas.”

“BSF officials have handed over the proposal of single row fencing to their Bangladesh counterparts. The BGB would forward the proposal to their government for approval. Senior officials of BGB and BSF would soon jointly visit the areas where the single row fencing would be build,” he added.

India is erecting a barbed wire fence and putting up floodlights along the 4,095-km India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal, Tripura, Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram to stop trans-border movement of militants, check infiltration, and curb smuggling and various border crimes.

iOS 6 Release Date Approaches: How To Get Your iPhone Ready For The …

Before going ahead, you must ensure that Restrictions are disabled on the device. Otherwise, the device may not be able to transfer the purchases, backup or sync with the computer. In order to do this, go to Settings General Restrictions and disable them.

Get Rid Of Aging Stuff

There must be many applications in your device that you don’t use anymore. Your device could also be cluttered with other contents like music and videos that you no longer listen to or watch. This kind of stuff consumes a lot of space on your device, so it’s time to get rid of all those to make sure that you have ample space on your device when the update arrives.

Back Up Your Device

Backing up your device is very crucial before you upgrade to iOS 6 as it will ensure that you don’t lose your stuff on the device even if something goes wrong with the upgrade process.

As CNET noted, while some content is backed up to the computer via Wi-Fi, some others are backed up to iCloud. You must know that you get unlimited free storage for purchased music, movies, TV shows, apps and books.

Make sure that your device is connected Wi-Fi and a power source, and then got to Settings, then iCloud, then Storage Backup, scroll to the bottom and then select Backup Now. The backup will occur automatically.

In terms of backing up to iCloud, you get 5GB of free iCloud storage for photos, videos, device settings, App data, Home screen and app organization, past messages and ringtones. To do that, go to Settings, then iCloud, then Storage Backup and tap Manage Storage.

What you can do now is flipping the switches for Camera Roll and other apps to back up all your settings, app data and photos. These backups take place once daily automatically as long as your device is connected to a power source.

Organize The Apps You Use

After removing the unused apps from the device, you should organize the apps that you use regularly by making folders. Thus, you can categorize them to access them quickly. You can create a separate folder for apps that you use in a regular basis.

Get The Latest Version Of iTunes

You will need the latest version of iTunes to use iOS 6. Currently, iTunes 10.7 is in use.

You can get the latest version of iTunes through Apple’s website, where you will need to download and install it on your computer.

Another way to get it is to manually check for any update. To do this, go to iTunes Check for Updates (Mac) or Help Check for Updates (Windows).

Single-minded focus on a movie only increases our danger

Relentless inquisitor Reader Mike (no relation) fired off a pointed question this morning:

Why is it so important for those on the left to pretend that this so-called movie is the reason behind the recent Muslim terrorism?

I note this here because it’s a variation of the question rolling around in my head all weekend. Report after report of violence and protest — not necessarily the same thing — washed in from Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Tunisia, Sudan, Australia, France, Lebanon, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Indonesia, the West Bank and the Gulf Arab states. The “anger,” whether genuine or manufactured, targeted the West generally and the U.S. and Israel specifically. Walls were scaled, flags burned, diplomats killed.

One big circle of thought later, my only answer to Reader Mike’s question is the most obvious: If we do not blame the YouTube film clip for causing all this havoc, we must blame current U.S. administration policy or the perceived weakness thereof.

This is why the left, the Obama administration and many in my chosen profession settled almost immediately on the movie motive, even before the body of the U.S. ambassador to Libya and the three other murder victims had been shipped back stateside. Since Cairo and Benghazi, just about every news account has stated as fact that a months-old film that few saw was was the cause.

U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice was on the Sunday talks pushing the administration line. She follows White House spokesman Jay Carney, who last week said about the same thing with the added specificity that one could not blame administration policies or “the American people” for creating all this apparent anger.

I will allow that they could be partly right, if they would allow that they have no way to know whether what they’re saying is the truth. And that even if what some of what they say is accurate, it’s far from the entire picture.

Proving motive is a tricky business, whether day-to-day crime or large-scale terrorism. It’s pretty clear that the attack that led to the four murders in Libya was no spontaneous mob scene. Too much coordination, too much planning. A film that supposedly insults Mohammed could have been a handy excuse, but even Libya’s president doesn’t buy that.

No, the movie motive is, at best, an assumption, a working theory. And that’s being fairly generous with benefit of the doubt to those arguing that point of view. It offers the convenient byproduct of shifting blame from official to unofficial. It allows officials to say, in effect, “Hey, nothing we could have done. Not our fault. Blame someone else.”

Beyond the obvious danger in making the world’s only superpower look even more impotent in the face of terrorism, the administration’s hard line on the movie motive also creates another problem:

If they are right, what’s to prevent this from happening again? If such an amateur production filmed under constitutional free-speech protections really is more than the Muslim world can bear, what’s to stop the next fakey filmmaker from causing this on purpose?

Or what’s to stop a genuine terrorist group from posting a video to YouTube that puts the rest of America’s diplomatic corps in mortal danger?

After all the supposed provocations over the decades, after the Iranian Revolution, the first World Trade Center bombing, the U.S.S. Cole, 9/11 and everything else, we should be smarter and more careful about giving excuse to terrorists.
